Getting help

Most answers are in the manual, and press F1 in any dialog to open its page. For everything else there is GitHub.

Reporting a bug

Bugs get fixed fastest when they can be reproduced. Please include:

  1. The version and architecture from Help › About Sally, for example 1.0.32 (x64), and your Windows version.
  2. Exact steps, from starting Sally to the problem, and what you expected instead.
  3. The shape of the names involved when paths matter: long paths, non-English characters, network shares, archives. A made-up name with the same shape is fine.
  4. A diagnostic report: Help › Report a Bug writes one with your configuration and shell integration state, without closing Sally. Attach it after checking it contains nothing private.
  5. Whether the latest release still has the problem. It may already be fixed; see the changelog.

When Sally crashes

Sally's bug reporter appears after a crash and saves a report with a minidump. Attach those files to the issue; with the release's debug symbols they show where the crash happened.

Antivirus warnings

Sally is not yet code-signed. If your antivirus flags a release, report the exact detection name, the file it names, and your antivirus version, so the false positive can be submitted to the vendor.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sally the same as Open Salamander or Altap Salamander?

Sally is an independent continuation of Open Salamander, which is the open-source release of Altap Salamander 4.0. It keeps the same workflow and can import your old settings, but it is maintained separately. The original authors do not support Sally; please report Sally problems here. See About.

Does Sally need to be installed?

No. Unpack the zip and run sally.exe. Settings are stored per user in the registry; Options › Export Configuration copies them to a file. See Where settings live.

How do I switch to dark mode?

Options › Configuration › Appearance › Theme, and choose Dark, or System to follow Windows.

How do I change the language?

Options › Configuration › Language. Eleven languages ship with every release.

Can Sally create RAR archives?

The built-in UnRAR plugin reads and unpacks RAR. To create RAR archives, install WinRAR and set it up as an external packer under Options › Configuration › Packers.

Does Sally support SFTP or SCP?

Not yet. The built-in FTP Client supports FTP and FTPS (FTP over TLS). The WinSCP plugin that provided SFTP and SCP in Altap Salamander needs a compiler Sally's build does not use, so it is not shipped.

Do my old Altap Salamander plugins still work?

Plugins built for Altap Salamander 4.0 can be loaded. Because their binary interface is older, Sally asks you once whether to trust each one.

Where did the Official Support Forum go?

Help › Official Support Forum now opens Sally's GitHub Discussions. The old Altap forum is not used for Sally.

Does Sally run on Windows 7 or 8.1?

Sally is developed and tested on Windows 10 and 11. Its code still targets the Windows 7 API, but older versions are not tested, and the Web Viewer needs the WebView2 Runtime.

Does Sally run on Linux or macOS?

On Linux it runs under Wine 10.0 or newer; see Linux and Wine. macOS is not supported.
